끊어 읽기

 

1. 단어나 절을 연결해주는 접속사 and, or, but, as 앞에서 끊어 읽는다.
   - Lift the weights above your head / and hold them for 20 seconds.
   - After reaching the goal, you can go home / or keep working.

2. 절과 절을 이어주는 관계사 앞에서 끊어 읽는다.
   - I saw Matt's car yesterday, / which was very expensive.
   - I forgot to tell him / that he doesn't have to come to work
   - Do you remember / what he had for dinner last weekend?

3. 분사문구 앞에서 끊어 읽어는다. 동사가 -ing, -ed 형태로 변형되어 사용되는
   분사구문은 바로 앞의 명사를 꾸며주는 형용사 역활을 한다.
   - We are going to review the ideas / pesented at the workshop.
   - There are some people / watching the performance.

4. 문장의 주어가 세 단어 이상인 경우, 동사 앞에서 끊어 읽는다.
   - Traveling to Japan by ship / takes about 5 hours.
   - The tranis to Wells Conference Center / will arrive at the station
      in five mintues.

5. 네 단어 이상의 긴 전치사 구 앞에서 끊어 읽는다.
   - All stores will be closed  / for the rest of the week.

   - You can avoid this traffic congestion / by taking Park Avenue.

6. 구두점(마침표, 쉼표, 물음표) 뒤에서 길게 끊어 읽는다.
   - If you are planning on outdoor activitiy for this weekend,
     / you're lucky today. / First of all, / thank you for attending
     today's job failr. /

Examples)
   - Taking photographs / and touching any equipment
      /are not allowed in the lab.
   - The theater has many interesting features / which you will notice
      /as you walk down the hall.
   - We request / that you return to the bus / within 15 minutes.
   - Our conference center/ located on Kevin Street / offers the best facilities
     /and services.
